A destination of upper-tier dining, art and entertainment, executive chef Christine Mast brings to Sofia a fresh perspective and honest approach to Italian cuisine. Committed to sourcing quality ingredients to pay homage to true Italian tastes, Mast’s Italian heritage serves as a resource for authentic and inspired plates.
“What I love most about Italian cuisine is the depth of flavour that can be experienced in even the simplest dishes,” says Chef Mast, “when guests come to Sofia, they will experience something different. That key differentiator is the use of the freshest ingredients prepared to enhance the foods’ natural flavours.”
Delicacies including olive oil varietals, Bagòss cheese and Calabrian chilis have been directly sourced from Italy and handpicked by executive chef Christine Mast. A wide selection of pasta will be made in-house with house-baked breads, meat and fish prepared daily in a charcoal, wood burning fire for a signature, smoky flavour.
“Sofia marks our return to Yorkville in the best way possible,” says Charles Khabouth, CEO, INK Entertainment. “We have worked with the best in the business to create an experience of terrific food, art, entertainment and design that excites the senses and instills curiosity. Sofia is much more than a place to enjoy dinner, but to stay, savour and explore with those around.”
Tapping into true Italian tastes, the menu starts with a selection of antipasti including a citrus salad and grilled octopus, and a plentiful selection of crudo. Mains feature fresh pasta, pesce and locally sourced carne, with a traditional, Italian heritage Chianina florentine steak.
The cocktail program is a refreshing medley of signature drinks with an Italian twist. Expertly crafted by mixologist Nishan Nepulangoda, cocktails are enhanced by regional herbs and fresh in-house cordials, and named in tribute to the country’s vast geography and pop culture history. The wine list features many vintages and an extensive selection of true Italian wines rare to the local dining scene.
Designed by award-winning Studio Munge, Sofia welcomes guests through a black-framed glass door into the foyer – a prism of high contrasts setting the tone for what is to come. Through to the heart of the restaurant, lustrous crimson fabrics sensationalize brilliant white walls and progressive furniture design. An inspired David Drebin mural encases the bar, fueling the Italian fantasy of vacationing in the Tuscan hills above Florence. Rich marbles in gradient shades of purple, pink, and jade form an expressive herringbone floor.
The restaurant will feature works from and is also adjacent to Canada’s first Taglialatella Gallery, marking INK Entertainment’s venture into the world of art. Scheduled to launch in Yorkville later this Spring with a joint thoroughfare, guests can explore paintings, sculptures and works on paper by contemporary and modern artists among the likes of Mr. Brainwash and Jeff Koons.
Sofia will be open seven days weekly for dinner at 5pm, with brunch and lunch to launch in the coming weeks. Weekly programming includes daily aperitivo with half-priced select cocktails and appetizers Monday through Friday from 5pm to 8pm, Jazzy Brunch and Family Style Dinner Sunday, and Pop Art Tuesdays with prosecco-based cocktail promotions. Guests can also look forward to a diverse selection of live entertainment throughout the week.
